Carnival cruise line’s “mardi gras” coming to the port

Very recently, Port Canaveral has greenlit the development of a new cruise terminal to be the home of the largest ship to be docked at the Port yet. This is a collection of all the information we have been able to find about the ship and the new terminal. A project like this has a lot of details, so we’ll spare you the technical details and focus on what will appeal to all you cruisers and travelers out there!

The Mardi Gras is set to be a fantastic, behemoth of a cruise ship. Frequent cruisers will now have to embark on a cruise with Carnival in order to hold the title of having taken a ride on the Port’s biggest and newest ship. This new member to the family of ships that dock in Port Canaveral will offer space for 6500 passengers and 2000 crew members to accommodate for them. It will also be the first North American-based cruise ship powered by liquefied natural gas. What I think is the coolest element is the roller coaster that will be on board! You read it right, the Mardi Gras will be the first cruise ship to sport a full roller coaster on deck.

The development of this new cruise terminal to house the Mardi Gras is one of the largest construction projects to take place at the Port. The terminal has racked up a price tag of 150$ million, but through what Ivey Construction calls “value engineering”, they are finding several ways to reduce the cost of construction by millions of dollars.

Itineraries for this new ship include trips to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. They are either 7-day or 8-day trips.

Western Caribbean (7-day)

  • Mahogany Bay
  • Costa Maya
  • Cozumel

Eastern Caribbean (7-day)

  • Grand Turk
  • Amber Cove
  • San Juan

Eastern Caribbean (8-day)

  • St. Thomas
  • San Juan
  • Amber Cove
  • Grand Turk

If you’re a local, keep your eyes out for the terminal currently being built and for the new ship!  If you’re a traveler planning a trip, you can expect to book a cruise on the Mardi Gras by next year.  It will be exciting to see Carnival’s progress with this endeavor and I think Port Canaveral is ready to welcome a new ship to our roster!
